The Peacock: An east end treasure with a touch of Irish charm
Welcome to The Peacock, a hidden treasure in the back streets of East London.
The Peacock is one of the last remaining original east end boozers left in Stepney. Constructed in 1881, it was one of only two pubs in the area to survive World War II. Situated opposite the Thames Magistrate Court and Police Station, it quickly gained the nickname 'The Copper's Pub', and was one of the few not frequented by local villains that made London’s east end so infamous.
After the Court moved location and the police station closed down, The Peacock remained a staple of the community for the next 50 years. Passed down from one generation to another, The Peacock remained in the same family for generations, until it’s unfortunate closure and sale in 2022.
Carefully redeveloped and refurbished, the pub reopened in late 2023. Maintaining it’s original features and character, the pub boasts a fresh modern look that both honours the rich history of the pub, and showcases the exciting future it has ahead.
At The Peacock, we strive to showcase what makes Irish hospitality so renowned, and blend it with the charm and character you can only get from a proper East-End pub. With regular live music, a wide selection of cask ales, British & Irish Craft Beers, and over 20 Irish whiskeys. From a midweek catchup, to a Friday night to remember (or not
Our Story
Having literally grown up in, and around pubs, with publican parent’s, hospitality is in our blood, and is the driving force behind our every decision.
A pub isn’t just a place to drink, its a focal point of the community. Its a place to meet new friends and old, a place to celebrate the good times, and have company during the bad. The local pub is the one place everyone should feel welcome, and everyone should feel at home.
A rare sight for a London pub, we are 100% independent (owned and operated). We have no links to major pub chains, no ties with big corporate breweries, and strive to keep community at the heart of our pubs. Whilst certainly challenging in this financial climate, this independence allows us to ensure our full commitment and focus is on providing the best quality products, to ensure you have the best experience possible.
After saving The Bricklayers Arms in Putney from closure in 2021, and rebuilding it into a beacon for pub lovers across London (and further) our goal is to ensure The Peacock remains a vital part of its community. The Peacock has been here for over 140 years, and our aim is to ensure it survives, and is still here in another 140 years.
